SHIFT Lab

Helping leaders and organizations make strategic decisions about artificial intelligence and frontier technologies.

Technology does not determine the future. Strategic decisions do. SHIFT studies how organizations decide where emerging technologies create value, what must change, and what capabilities are required to act responsibly.

About

Making technological change a strategic organizational question

The SHIFT Lab advances research on how leaders and organizations make strategic decisions about artificial intelligence and other frontier technologies.

Our mission is to generate, translate, and mobilize research that helps organizations determine where emerging technologies create value, what capabilities are required for successful implementation, how responsible governance can be strengthened, and how organizations can continually adapt as technologies evolve.

SHIFT brings together researchers, students, organizational leaders, and cross-sector partners to advance evidence-informed technology strategy through interdisciplinary research, leadership development, and collaborative learning.

The SHIFT research framework

Making strategic decisions about frontier technologies

SHIFT focuses on the sequence of choices that turns technological possibility into organizational strategy.

Making Strategic Decisions About Frontier Technologies Emerging technologies move through four strategic questions: where they create value, whether they sustain strengthen or shift the organizational model, whether the organization has the capability to build implement and govern them, and what must change. These choices shape strategic direction and organizational capability. Making Strategic Decisions About Frontier Technologies The SHIFT Lab Research Framework Emerging Technologies AI • Robotics • Digital Twins • Quantum • Extended Reality • Future Technologies Strategic Organizational Choice What should the organization do, and why? Where does it create value? For whom? At what cost and risk? Does it sustain, strengthen, or shift the model? Business, service, or operating model Do we have the capability to build, implement, and govern? People • Data • Systems Leadership • Oversight What must shift? Work and expertise Structures and processes Governance and investment Strategic Direction and Organizational Response Adopt • Adapt • Delay • Redirect • Scale • Stop Organizational Capability for Continual Adaptation Leadership • Learning • Strategic Foresight • Governance • Renewal

SHIFT studies how these questions are framed, answered, and revised as technologies, organizational conditions, and public expectations evolve.
